Mercury Insurance Group has been in business for over 50 years and offers auto insurance through local agents. Mercury advertises that it offers low rates and excellent coverage options for homeowners, condo, renters, umbrella, auto/mechanical breakdown, business auto, and business insurance in 11 states.

Mercury Insurance Group is headquartered in Los Angeles, California. It was founded by George Joseph in 1961. Mr. Joseph’s purpose in creating Mercury Insurance Group was to provide a low-cost alternative to the bigger insurance companies. It caters to good drivers with clean driving records and offers preferred policies at a lower insurance premium.

Mercury Insurance continues to grow as a leading writer for automobile insurance and is the third-largest private passenger automobile insurer in the state of California. Mercury Insurance Group has assets of over $5.9+ billion due in part to its tight underwriting and efficient claims handling.

In 2009, Mercury Insurance Group purchased AIS Management, LLC, parent company of Auto Insurance Specialists, LLC. AIS became Mercury’s independent broker selling Mercury Insurance products.

Financial Stability and Customer Service Ratings

A.M. Best insurance rating organization has given Mercury Insurance Group its highest financial strength rating of “A” (Excellent). This means that you can trust in the company’s ability to be able be around when you need them most and to pay its financial obligations and claims.

In customer satisfaction ratings through J.D. Power & Associates, Mercury Insurance Group did not fare as well. The company scored 787 out of 1,000 point scale, according to J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. The J.D. Power & Associates ratings are based on customer satisfaction levels in the billing process and policy information, claims, customer interaction, policy offerings, and price.

The company was named by Forbes in 2019 as one of America’s best mid-size employers for the third year in a row. The Forbes survey relies on market research as well as actual employee reviews. The survey shows that employees recommend Mercury Insurance Group to friends and family.

Insurance Products

Homeowners insurance options include dwelling protection, personal property coverage, extended replacement cost, additional living expenses, personal liability protection, guest medical protection and identity theft protection. There is additional personal property coverage available for expensive items such as antiques, fine art and jewelry.

Condo insurance can be customized to suit your needs with coverage for personal property, additional personal property, home improvements, loss assessment, additional living expenses, personal liability protection, guest medical protection, workers’ comp coverage and liability/contents coverage on your condo when rented to others.

Renters insurance from Mercury provides coverage for your possessions and valuables from a covered loss. There is coverage for personal property, additional personal property, personal liability protection, guest medical protection and workers comp coverage.

Umbrella insurance provides additional liability protection to protect you from unexpected events that you could be sued for. This additional liability coverage is in addition to what you already have with your current auto or homeowners policy.

Business Auto coverage from Mercury provides a variety of coverage options: liability, collision, comprehensive, medical, personal injury protection (PIP), and uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage. The coverage is offered for any number of business vehicle types (passenger vehicles, buses, vans, pickups, flatbeds, box trucks, utility trucks, etc.) to a variety of businesses including artisans, caterers, farmers, construction workers, pest control, sales/marketing professionals, wholesale workers, etc.

Business Insurance provided through Mercury includes the business owners, commercial property and commercial liability policies. Some of the industries covered are apartment owners, warehouses, restaurants, metalworkers, storage facilities, offices, print/design businesses and more. Policies can be customized and extra coverage added for electronic data processing equipment, mechanical breakdown, building ordinance, sewer back-up, and more.

Mechanical Breakdown protection includes 24-hour emergency roadside assistance, trip interruption insurance and rental vehicle assistance. Coverage is nationwide and repairs can be made at any licensed U.S. repair facility. There is no claims limit number and the coverage is transferrable.

Personal auto policy options include: Liability, Collision, Comprehensive, Medical, Personal Injury Protection (PIP), Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist, Rental Car Reimbursement and Roadside Assistance.

Discounts

Some of the discounts available to auto insurance customers through Mercury Insurance include: Good Driver Discount, Multi-Car Vehicle Discount, Anti-Theft Feature Discount, and Good Student Discount. The company refers customers to a local agent to find the best rate and discount options for auto and homeowners insurance.

Operating Territory

Coverage is offered for the following states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia. Not all coverage options or discounts are available in all states.

Policy Services

From the company website, insurance customers may file a claim; pay a bill, review policy options, access policy documents, and request changes to their insurance coverage. To obtain an auto insurance quote, you must provide the vehicle identification numbers for all of your vehicles, lienholder information, and your driver’s license number.

Pros

Some customer reviews have stated positive customer service experience in the areas of payments and handling of claims. Mercury Insurance Group has superior financial strength ratings and customers can trust in the company’s ability to be able to meet financial obligations and pay claims.

Cons

Mercury Insurance Group only provides insurance coverage in 11 states. All policy types and discounts are not available in all 11 states.
