Compare.com is headquartered in Glen Allen, Virginia. It was founded in 2013 by Andrew Rose. The parent company of Compare.com is the Admiral Group, Plc. The company’s original name of Comparenow.com was changed to Compare.com for simplicity and to better align with the services offered. In the beginning, the company started with car insurance comparison with only a few companies and has grown to include multiple local and national car insurance brands.

Compare.com is a relative newcomer to the United States; however, its operations through its sister site, Confused.com, has been providing car insurance comparison rates in Europe for several years. On its website, Compare.com stresses to customers that it only offers quotes from trusted, licensed and reputable partner insurance companies all of whom have been approved by each state’s Department of Insurance.

Originally, there were only 24 insurance partner companies but that number has grown to 50. The additional companies were added to offer customers more options for insurance companies from not only well-known carriers but also from lesser known carriers who also offer affordable and flexible insurance plan options.

Some of the partner companies of Compare.com include 21st Century Insurance, Arrowhead Insurance, Auto Insurance America, Dairyland Auto Insurance, Direct General Auto Insurance, Elephant Insurance, The General Insurance, Good2Go Insurance, Infinity, Liberty Mutual, Safe Auto Insurance, Safeway Insurance, Mercury Insurance and more.

Recently, Compare.com has partnered with Coverhound insurance comparison website. Compare.com has several television commercials advertising its services. You may recognize the mascots, Isaac and Johnny, known as the “spokes-apples” for Compare.com. The mascot apples are meant to relay the concept of comparing insurance side by side — or apples to apples.

How It Works

Compare.com provides many different types of insurance comparison quotes including auto, homeowners, life, health, motorcycle, small business, and travel insurance. Insurance rates are available in 48 continental U.S. states. To compare insurance coverage at Compare.com, you will need detailed information about what coverage options you desire and specific usage information.

Here are the criteria you will be asked to enter for some of the types of quotes provided by Compare.com:

  • Auto insurance quote: Zip code, number of vehicles, year, make and model of vehicles, safety features, vehicle ownership, annual mileage, number of drivers, insured states, name, address, date of birth, telephone number, license status, marital status, level of education, employment status, resident status, drivers training courses, insurance and driving history.
  • Homeowners insurance quote: Home address, burglar alarms, dog ownership, pool ownership
  • Motorcycle insurance quote: Motorcycle value, coverage desired (liability only?), zip code

Once you receive your comparison quotes, if you decide to bind coverage, you can do so directly through the carrier online or through a local agent.

Better Business Bureau Rating

Compare.com has an “A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has been an accredited business since 6/1/2015. There are no complaints against the company but this could be because the file with the BBB has only been open for a short time.

The Bottom Line

According to a report by research consulting firm, GlobalData, price comparison websites where customers can compare coverage options and prices are an established fixture within the insurance industry. More and more individuals are expected to access price comparison websites as competition grows within the industry.

Compare.com CEO, Andrew Rose, claims its insurance comparison quote service is unique in that you get a more accurate quote, based on the information you provide, than you would from other insurance comparison services. Of course, the more detailed information you provide to a company, the more accurate your quote will be. Without the proper details, your quote could come back much higher than expected and no one likes that kind of surprise. So, if you want to compare several different insurance options side-by-side, Compare.com would be a good service to try, providing you have detailed information to provide for the insurance coverage you desire.

Insurance comparison websites, such as Compare.com is another tool you can use when shopping for the best value on an insurance policy. If you are uncomfortable sharing detailed personal information then this service might not be the best one for you. However, do keep in mind that the more detailed and accurate information you provide, the more accurate your insurance quote will be.
